Plants and animals in lakes, rivers and seas react to changes in their environment caused by changes in chemical water quality and physical disturbance of their habitat. Biochemical ecology is here presented only in the context of water pollution. Effort has been made to use physical and chemical principles to explain the factors controlling the quality of natural waters.
